Valparaiso, Ind. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team saw two individuals advance to the Flight A doubles finals at the Valpo Fall Tennis Invitational.
Sophomore Tony Leto and freshman Jason Kerst received a bye the first round before defeating the Washington University duo of Kozlowski and Haugen, 6-4.
In Flight A singles, Kerst won his first match as a Hawkeye, 6-1, 6-0, over Grant Reiman of Eastern Illinois University (EIU). Kerst is slated to play his semifinal match Saturday at 9:45 a.m. (ET).
“I was very impressed with Jason today,” said UI assistant coach Matt Hagan. “He’s playing in the toughest flight of the tournament and he beat a good player today.”
Leto competed in Flight C where he took on Jared Woodson of EIU for a, 6-1, 7-5, win. Leto will begin semifinal competition at 12:45 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
“Tony has made some big strides not only in the way he hits the ball but he’s tougher mentally,” said Hagan. “He won some big points in his match today so you can see that with one full year under his belt he’s a better player.”
The Hawkeye duo are scheduled to play their doubles championship match Saturday at 9 a.m. (ET).
