IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sixty-six University of Iowa student-athletes have been named to the 2016 Big Ten Fall Academic All-Conference team. The list includes student-athletes from football (22), women’s soccer (16), field hockey (10), women’s cross country (8), men’s cross country (5), and volleyball (5).
The 22 football selections are a school record, breaking the mark of 18 set in 2007. The soccer program’s 16 honorees tie a school record set in 2000. Field hockey’s 10 honorees are the most since 2012 and the eight women’s cross country selections are the most since 2011. Iowa had 22 more student-athletes recognized than in 2015.
The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 1,014 fall sports athletes. The list includes 101 field hockey players, 309 football players, 72 men’s and 153 women’s cross country runners, 93 men’s and 186 women’s soccer student-athletes and 100 volleyball players.
At least 16 of the fall honorees have maintained unblemished cumulative GPAs, including Iowa’s Kaleigh Haus (women’s soccer) and Annika Olsen (volleyball).
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners and be in at least their second academic year at the institution. They must also carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
