CHICAGO – The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team kicked off the 2017 season at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday. Iowa finished fifth with a score of 387.550.
Andrew Botto and Dylan Ellsworth notched top-10 finishes in their season debut.
Iowa started the meet on parallel bars. Ellsworth led the team, scoring a 13.700 to put him in a tie for seventh place among individual scorers.
Iowa moved on to high bar in rotation two. Botto was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes, tying for ninth with a 13.650.
Iowa’s third rotation was on floor. Freshman Andrew Herrador recorded the highest score of the rotation for the Hawkeyes with a 13.550. He finished 17th overall.
Pommel horse followed. Elijah Parsells posted the highest score for the Black and Gold with a 12.200.
Jake Brodarzon led the Hawkeyes on the rings. The sophomore recorded a 12.900 to finish 18th overall.
The final rotation for Iowa was vault. Botto registered his second top-10 finish of the day, tying for eighth with a 14.150.
The Hawkeye return to action next week. Iowa hosts UIC on Jan. 22 in its first home meet of the season. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m. (CT) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
