Hawkeyes Host 3 Teams This Weekend

THIS WEEK:

  • The University of Iowa men’s tennis team hosts three teams Friday and Sunday inside the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. 
  • The Hawkeyes will square off first against Omaha at 11 a.m. (CT) before taking on the Drake Bulldogs at 6 p.m. on Friday.
  • On Sunday, Iowa faces Dartmouth in an 11 a.m. (CT) matchup.
  • Admission is free to the public

JUNIOR JOSH SILVERSTEIN

  • Clinched a major road win for the Hawkeyes against Texas Tech, 4-3, at the ITA Kickoff event held on the campus of Texas Tech University.
  • Defeated No. 25 Jolan Cailleau to win the match.
  •  Beat his second ranked opponent during a spring season.
  • Then-No. 113 Alex Knight of Michigan fell to the Hawkeye in Iowa City last season.

“Josh is a grinder. He keeps a lot of balls in play, he’s fast and he wants to go out there, take your biggest shot and counter punch from there,” said UI head coach Ross Wilson.
“The win says a lot about our guys…to the commitment they have to our program and to becoming a great team this year.”

RECRUITS

  • The men’s tennis program welcomes a 2017 recruiting class that is ranked 17th nationally. 
  • Iowa has the third-highest ranked recruiting class in the Big Ten team ranked behind Illinois (4) and Ohio State (14).
  • Will Davies and Joe Tyler hail from Great Britain.
  • Nikita Snezhko is from Minnesota.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Drake

  • Last season, Iowa fell to Drake, 4-3, in Des Moines
  • Iowa leads the all-time series, 24-14
  • Bulldog sophomore Vinny Gillespie is ranked No. 73 nationally in singles.
  • Gillespie has played in the No. 1 position in every match this season.
  • The Bulldogs dropped to No. 9 Texas in Austin over the weekend

Omaha

  • Omaha defeated Big Ten opponent, Nebraska, 4-3, Jan. 21. 
  • This will be the first meeting between the Mavericks and the Hawkeyes.

Darmouth

  • Dartmouth is 2-2 on the season.
  • One of their losses has come to Iowa Big Ten foe, Indiana.
  • Iowa leads the all-time seris, 9-6.
