CHAMPAIGN, Illinois — Senior Andrew Botto won two event titles, but the University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team lost to the University of Illinois, 397.000-409.500, on Saturday night.
Botto claimed the all-around crown with a season-best score of 81.550. His second event title came on vault where his season-best 14.950 helped the Hawkeyes to their highest rotation of the night (72.050). Junior Dylan Ellsworth was runner-up with a score of 14.600. Senior Cory Paterson tied his season-best score of 14.150 to finish eighth.
The Hawkeyes notched a 68.150 on high bar. Junior Austin Hodges finished runner-up with a score of 14.000. Paterson followed with a score of 13.900 to earn a third-place finish. Freshman Andrew Herrador tied for fourth with a score of 13.750.
Iowa recorded a 67.700 on rings. Senior Mark Springett led the Hawkeyes with a score of 14.050 to finish third. Botto followed in fourth with a score of 13.900, while Ellsworth rounded out the top five with a score of 13.800.
The Hawkeyes tallied a 66.100 on parallel bars. Hodges recorded his second runner-up finish with a score of 14.000. Botto and Ellsworth followed with third (13.500) and fourth (13.300) place finishes, respectively.
Springett registered the top finish for the Hawkeyes on floor. His 13.900 earned him a third-place finish. The Hawkeyes registered a team score of 63.900 in the event.
The Hawkeyes posted a 59.200 on pommel horse. Hodges scored a 13.200, which earned him a third-place finish. Botto and junior Elijah Parsells tied for fourth with a score of 12.600.
The Hawkeyes head to Lincoln, Nebraska to face off against the Huskers at the Bob Devaney Sport Center on March 4. Competition is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m (CT).
