INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team split its two matches today in the state of Indiana. The Hawkeyes started the day with a 4-1 loss to Indiana in Bloomington before blanking Butler in Indianapolis, 4-0.
In the nightcap, the Hawkeyes began with singles competition outdoors against Butler before finishing the match inside. Iowa did not play doubles against Butler (14-5) after clinching the match with four singles wins.
Redshirt freshman Kareem Allaf won singles matches today at one and two. Versus Butler, Allaf took down Aviv Ben Shabat, 6-4, 7-5. He improved to 12-9 on the season.
Freshman Jason Kerst won his third match as a Hawkeye with a victory over Butler’s Adrian Mag, 6-2, 6-2.
Iowa saw two other singles victories on Sunday. Junior Josh Silverstein (6-4, 6-2) and sophomore Jonas Larsen (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) won at number two and three, respectively, against Butler.
Against Indiana (13-10, 4-5), Iowa’s doubles squad of Larsen and senior Nils Hallestrand finished off Zac Brodney and Bennett Crane in a tiebreak, 7-6(6). However, Iowa lost close doubles matches at one and two, losing the doubles point to the Hoosiers.
Iowa (12-13, 1-8) returns to action Friday in its final homestand of the season, hosting Michigan at 4 p.m. (CT) at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex. Admission is free to the public.
