IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa volleyball student-athlete Ashley Mariani has signed a contract to play volleyball for VfB Suhl LOTTO Thuringen. VfB Suhl LOTTO Thuringen is a professional team located in Suhl, Germany.

“I have decided to further my career as a volleyball player by going pro,” said Mariani. “I am more than excited for these opportunities to go experience and submerge myself in new cultures.”

“We are so proud of Ashley’s transformation as an elite level middle hitter during her time as a Hawkeye,” said UI head coach Bond Shymansky. “Her exposure on our team tour last spring opened her eyes to professional volleyball opportunities. We are at the forefront of a proud tradition of developing professional athletes at Iowa and I know that Ashley will have a big impact on her team this season.”

Mariani will play middle blocker for VfBSuhl OTTO Thuringen beginning in early September. Prior to starting her professional career, Mariani has been selected to represent Team USA at the World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan, from Aug. 18-30.
