IOWA CITY, Iowa — Seven men’s gymnasts — Andrew Botto, Austin Hodges, Josh Zeal, Cory Paterson, Mark Springett, Jake Brodarzon, and Brandon Wong — were named All-American Scholar Athletes for the 2017 season, the College Gymnastics Association announced Thursday afternoon.
All-American Scholar Athletes must maintain above a 3.500 GPA to qualify for first team and between a 3.200-3.499 GPA to qualify for second team. Overall, 151 gymnasts were named All-American Scholar Athletes.
Three Hawkeyes were named to the first team, including Botto, Hodges, and Zeal. Botto earned first team accolades for the fourth straight year, while Hodges registered his third straight honor. Zeal, a freshman, earned the first honor of his career.
Paterson, Springett, Wong and Brodarzon were each named to the second team. Paterson earned the fourth honor of his career, while Springett qualified for the second straight season. Wong and Brodarzon each earned the first All-American Scholar accolades of their careers.
