Gustafson, Kemerer Named December Student-Athletes of the Month

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Student-Athletes Academic Services has recognized junior Megan Gustafson (Women’s Basketball) and sophomore Michael Kemerer (Wrestling) as December’s female and male student-athletes of the month.

The honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sports, but in the classroom as well.

Gustafson, a business major, led Iowa to a perfect 7-0 record in December, averaging 22.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, and shot 66.7 percent from the field. Gustafson has earned a conference weekly award in all nine weeks of the season, including three straight Player of the Week awards from December 18 to January 2. The Port, Wing Wisconsin, native is currently ranked in the top-10 in the nation in nine categories. She leads the nation in double-doubles (16) and field goals made (150), ranks second in field goal percentage (68.8), fourth in total points (386) and rebounds (214), seventh in rebounds per game (12.6) and points per game (22.7), eighth in defensive rebounds per game (8), and ninth in free throws made (86).

Kemerer posted an 8-0 record in December. The business major won the Midlands Championships at 157 pounds, going 6-0 with four pins and a technical fall. The Murrysville, Pennsylvania, native is ranked No. 2 in the country in his weight class and finished the month of December with four pins and three technical falls.

Gustafson and the 17th ranked women’s basketball team continue their conference season, hosting Purdue on Jan. 13 inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 3 p.m. (CT).

Kemerer and the seventh ranked Hawkeye wrestling team look to go 10-0 when they host No. 3 Oklahoma State Sunday, Jan. 14 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 3 p.m.
