THIS WEEK:

The University of Iowa men’s tennis team will host two matches on Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes will entertain Creighton (11 a.m.) and Denver (6 p.m.). Admission is free to the public.

WEEKEND RECAP:

•    The Hawkeyes dropped a road contest at Drake (4-1) on Friday before sweeping Arizona (4-1) and IUPUI (7-0) on Sunday in Iowa City.

•    Jake Jacoby and Jason Kerst picked up their first singles victories of the spring season.

CREIGHTON PREVIEW:

•     The Bluejays enter Friday’s match with a 2-4 overall record.

•     Creighton returns seven lettermen from last year’s team.

•     The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series with the Bluejays, 8-0. Iowa shutout Creighton last year in Iowa City, 7-0, on Jan. 21.

DENVER PREVIEW:

•     The Pioneers, who are 3-1 overall, have five freshmen on their roster.

•     Iowa leads Denver in the all-time series, 4-3-1. The Hawkeyes bounced Denver, 5-2, last year in Denver on Feb. 19.

 STARTING MATCHES STRONG:
Iowa has earned the doubles point in six of its eight matches, starting matches against Marquette, Western Michigan, Arkansas, Miami, Arizona, and IUPUI leading 1-0. The Hawkeyes lost the doubles point to No. 4 Georgia by a narrow margin, dropping courts one and two in tiebreakers.

Jonas Larsen and Kareem Allaf are 6-2 playing on court one in doubles so far this season, with one of their defeats coming in a tiebreak (7-3) to Georgia’s eighth-ranked doubles squad in the country.

PIOTR SMIETANA PICKS UP 2 WINS ON SUNDAY:
Freshman Piotr Smietana notched singles win over Aaro Pollanen of Arizona (7-5, 6-1) and IUPUI’s Jac Newis (6-1, 6-2). Smietana joins classmates Joe Tyler and Will Davies with identical 4-3 records in singles play this spring.

Ross Wilson, a former two-time NCAA All-American and three-time ITA national doubles champion at Ohio State, is in his fourth season as head coach and fifth year with the Iowa men’s tennis program.
