NORMAL, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Illinois State Sunday in an exhibition game at Adelaide Street Field.

Iowa looked strong in the first half, taking 10 shots with four on goal, but were unable to capitalize.

Illinois State took the lead with a goal from Natalie Vaughn-Low 26 seconds in to the game. Iowa’s Kaleigh Haus put the first shot on goal for Iowa in the 4th minute, but it was stopped by goalkeeper Haley Smith. In the 22nd minute, Skylar Alward had a chance at the equalizer, but the shot got saved by Smith.

The Hawkeyes had several opportunities in the second half but couldn’t score the equalizer.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“Today was a good opportunity to evaluate our team against a good program who will have success this year. It’s very difficult to start any game off when you give up a goal 30 seconds in.We are disappointed with that, but we bounced back to create enough opportunities to not only tie the game but go ahead.”

“Give Illinois State credit, they competed for 90 minutes and did some things that our girls didn’t adjust to very well. It was a great learning experience for the young group that played today.”
