IOWA CITY, Iowa — Four Hawkeyes — Will Davies, Piotr Smietana, Kareem Allaf, and Jonas Larsen — will compete at the 43rd Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The main draw at The Town Club begins on Thursday at 8 a.m.
Last season, Allaf competed in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic with graduating senior Josh Silverstein and advanced to the doubles semifinals, ultimately falling to the champions of the tournament. This year, Allaf and Larsen enter the tournament having won nine of their last 11 doubles matches, dating back to last spring, and ranked 35th in the country. The redshirt junior is also riding a nine match singles win streak, dating back to April 1, 2018.
Davies and Smietana return for their sophomore campaign. Davies and Smietana enjoyed a doubles ranking last year, knocking off two ranked opponents. The duo won 17 spring matches, which ranks third all-time at Iowa. Davies posted a 19-13 singles record, while Smietana went 10-17 at the top three positions for the Hawkeyes a year ago.
“It will be good for the guys to get out and finally play a tournament,” said Mellecker Family head coach Ross Wilson. “They have been practicing the last six weeks, so to get across the net against another team will be good to get their competitive juices flowing. This is a good tournament with a lot of good players from some of the best teams in the country. There’s a wildcard for the winner to advance to the ITA Fall National Tournament, so there will be good competition to see where our guys are early in the season.”
