MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – Three University of Iowa men’s tennis student-athletes won first round singles matches Thursday afternoon on day one of the 43rd annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Third-seeded Kareem Allaf bounced Collin Shick of N.C. State in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-0) to advance to the Round of 32. Also advancing in the main draw were sophomores Will Davies and Piotr Smietana. Davies cruised over Alex Jachim of IUPUI (6-1, 6-3), while Smietana was victorious over Marquette’s Fran San Andres (6-4, 4-6, 6-0).
The doubles team of Allaf/Larsen, ranked 35th nationally, was edged by sixth-seeded Gamerov/Norfeldt of San Diego, 7-6, in the Round of 32. Davies/Smietana won their first doubles match against IUPUI’s Jochim/Luetschwager (8-2).
The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is an ITA Gold Level Event; its men’s singles champion will receive an invitation to compete in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 7-11, in Indian Wells, California.
Action continues tomorrow with singles main draw Round of 32 and 16; singles consolation Round of 32; and Doubles Round of 16.
