IOWA CITY, Iowa — Five Hawkeyes — Will Davies, Piotr Smietana, Kareem Allaf, Joe Tyler, and Jonas Larsen — will compete at the ITA All-American Championships held on the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa this weekend.
The action begins on Saturday in the singles pre-qualifier with Davies, Larsen, Smietana, and Tyler all competing. This will be Tyler’s first time in action this fall after a solid freshmen campaign, posting the second most Big Ten singles victories on the team (6).
Last weekend, Davies registered the highest finish for the Hawkeyes at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The sophomore advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw by winning three matches in straight sets, including knocking off the fifth seeded player and No. 101 ranked player in the country from Virginia Tech. Smietana and doubles partner Davies advanced to the Round of 16.
Like Davies, Allaf recorded three singles wins over the weekend. Thejunior advanced to the Round of 16 before losing a third set tiebreaker. Allaf also won a consolation singles match against Wisconsin.
“This is another really good tournament,” said Mellecker Family Head Men’s Tennis Coach Ross Wilson. “Hopefully Will (Davies) can build on his success. I know that Kareem (Allaf) was a little disappointed losing in the Round of 16 last weekend, so he’s had a good week of practice. For Piotr (Smietana) and Jonas (Larsen), it’s another opportunity to get better and improve on what they did last weekend.
“Every fall is a process; playing four tournaments is different than most. We usually only play three tournaments, so we’ll get a few more matches in, grow as a team, and see where we are at going into January.”
