TULSA, Oklahoma — ThreeUniversity of Iowa men’s tennis student-athletes advanced to the Round of 32 in the singles bracket on Thursday at the ITA Central Regionals at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Sophomore Will Davies opened play with a victory over Ignacio Tintore Gonzlaez of Saint Louis, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Joe Tyler beat Nebraska’s Alvaro Moreno in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Kareem Allaf and freshman Oliver Okonkwo both earned byes to advance to the Round of 64. Jonas Larsen, Piotr Smietana, Nikita Snezhko, and Jason Kerst all dropped their opening round matches.
Davies, Allaf, and Okonkwo all advanced to the Round of 32. Davies had an impressive comeback over Tulsa’s Jarod Hing in a third set tiebreaker (5-7, 7-6, 7-6). Allaf defeated Big Ten foe Marino Alpeza of Minnesota (5-7, 6-4, 6-3). Okonkwo took care of business winning in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) against Mathieu Scaglia of Oklahoma State.
Two Hawkeye tandems advanced to the Round of 32 via bye in the doubles bracket. Davies/Okonkwo beat UMKC’s Stride/Giraldo (8-5), while Creighton’s Brown/Meuse defeated Snezko/Tyler in the opening round (8-4).
In consolation play the Hawkeyes swept the competition. Snezhko bounced Eddy Leardini of Oral Roberts (6-3, 7-5). Smietana rebounded with a victory against Wichita State’s Andrea Caligiana (6-3, 4-6, 10-7). Kerst earned the victory over Davide Callegari of North Dakota (5-1, retired). Larsen dropped Oral Roberts’ Blake Sprouse (6-0, 6-1) in his final singles match of the day.
