24 Hawkeyes to Watch 2018-19 | Hawkeye Fan Shop — A Black & Gold Store | Hawk Talk Monthly — October 2018
IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics coach JD Reive announced the 2018-19 schedule Wednesday. The Hawkeyes host four regular season home meets in addition to the Big Ten Championships on April 5-6.
Iowa starts its season with two road matches, beginning with the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 19. The Hawkeyes begin their home stretch with Minnesota and Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 2.
“It is kind of a fun piece for us this year,” said Reive. “We are finally doing an official Big Ten schedule. This is the first time men’s gymnastics has chosen to do this, so we will have an actual regular season Big Ten title up for grabs and that is awesome.”
Iowa faces five teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament last season, consisting of Illinois, Minnesota, four-time defending national champion Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Penn State.
“Strength of schedule is stronger than some other years, significantly, because we are going to see all of the Big Ten teams. The Big Ten is by far the strongest conference in the country for us. So, that is great. The better the strength of schedule, the better we perform.”
The Hawkeyes are set to host the Big Ten Championships April 5-6, followed by the NCAA tournament on April 19-20 in Champaign, Illinois.
“I think this is going to lay it out for the postseason the way we want it to. The fact that we have four regular season meets at home this year is wonderful, and senior night is live on BTN with Ohio State, which is awesome. Then we get to host the (Big Ten) Championships, which is something we are really looking forward to.”
