IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team hosted its annual Black and Gold Intrasquad on Saturday inside the UI Field House. The Gold team defeated the Black team by a score of three events to one.

The Intrasquad featured celebrity judges, including head soccer coach Dave DiIanni and women’s gymnastics alumni Nikki Youd.

“For us this serves multiple purposes,” Iowa head coach Larissa Libby said. “One of the purposes is to get the young women out in front of a crowd and the other is looking at the lineup and making sure everybody is in the right spot.”

Seven GymHawks made their collegiate debuts with many expected to see a lot of action in 2019 as the team continues to build on its depth.

With the season around the corner, the team’s primary focus is on themselves and what they can do to be the best team they can be.

“We tend to define success on our own level and in our own ways,” Libby added.

Looking ahead at the bigger picture, the Hawkeyes’ are still reminded of the competition in the Big Ten.

“My focus is always on the Big Ten Championships,” Libby said. “I feel like we have to prove ourselves in the conference and our conference is tough.”

The GymHawks open their season at Auburn Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. (CT). Live results of the meet will be available on hawkeyesports.com.
