IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Laulauga Tausaga began the Hawkeye Invitational with a new school record and a win in the weight throw (20.67m, 67-9 3/4) on Friday.
The Hawkeyes competed five women, advancing Tausaga and Nia Britt to the finals. Tausaga broke her previous school record (20.19m, 66-3) set at the Jimmy Grant Invitational in December. Britt finished fourth with an 18.32 meter (60-1 1/4) mark for a career best and Iowa’s sixth best all-time weight throw.
Juniors Erika Hammond (15.25m, 50-0 1/2) and Allison Wahrman (15.87m, 52-0 3/4) set collegiate bests in the event.
For the men, freshmen Dawson Ellingson and Jordan Hawkins competed unattached in the weight throw. Hawkins threw a collegiate best 14.95 meters (49-0 3/4).
The Hawkeye Invitational continues Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT), starting with jumps and shot put at the UI Rec Building. Running events start at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries. Admission is free.
