IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Jayah Mathews has been named the Big Ten Diver of the Week, it was announced Wednesday by the league office. It is Mathews’ third honor of the season.
The Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, native earned the distinction after sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions in Iowa’s dual victories over Western Illinois and Northern Iowa. Mathews posted a career-best score of 380.20 off the 3-meter and won the 1-meter with 324.70 points.
Mathews has earned five weekly Big Ten honors in her career (four diver of the week, one freshman of the week).
Iowa begins its championship season Feb. 20, traveling to Bloomington, Indiana, for the 2019 Big Ten Championships.
