LINCOLN, Nebraska — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team beat Nebraska, 5-2, in the Big Ten opener Sunday afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center.
Competition started with doubles where Iowa won two out of the three matches. Oliver Okonkwo and Will Davies got things going for the Hawkeyes with a victory on court two, 6-3, to win their team-best 10th match of the season. Piotr Smietana and Joe Tyler also won by the score of 6-3 on court three. Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen match on court one went unfinished after the Hawkeyes captured the doubles point.
In singles action, Okonkwo won his fourth straight match. He was victorious in straight sets on court three, registering his 11th victory of the season. Tyler continued his winning ways in a straight sets win (6-4, 6-4) at No. 3 over Victor Moreno Lozano. Junior Jason Kerst competed at the No. 6 spot for the Hawkeyes for the first time during the regular season and registered a 7-5, 6-4 win over Chris Dean to clinch the match for Iowa’s 10th victory. Davies added another point for the Hawkeyes on court five notching his 11th win of the season, tying Okonkwo for the team lead.
