33 Hawkeyes Qualify for NCAA Prelims

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa qualified 33 student-athletes for the 2019 NCAA Track and Field West Preliminary in Sacramento, California , the NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced Thursday.

Iowa’s 33 qualifiers will compete 38 times in 23 events. Twelve Hawkeyes will compete in multiple events.

The top 48 individuals and 24 relays in the west region advanced to the preliminary round. The top 12 individuals and relays will advance to the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8.

Junior Laulauga Tausaga leads Iowa with the highest regional ranking. Tausaga leads the region in the shot put (18.02 meters, 59-1 1/2) and ranks second in discus (62.28 meters, 204-4). The Spring Valley, California, native is coming off her third consecutive Big Ten title in the discus.

On the men’s side, the Hawkeyes have two individual Big Ten Champions that will compete in Sacramento. They include seniors Mar’yea Harris and Chris Douglas. Harris will make his fourth appearance in the 400-meter prelims. He enters the field with the he currently holds the fourth fastest time. Douglas will compete in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles for the second consecutive year. He is seeded 20th and 11th, respectively.
