IOWA CITY, Iowa — Senior Hannah Drkulec has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.   It is Drkulec’s first career honor.

The Windsor, Ontario, native earned the distinction after leading Iowa to a pair of season-opening victories over Western Michigan and Northern Iowa.  Drkulec anchored a Hawkeye backline that surrendered just four shots in two games, as Iowa outshot their opposition, 43-4.

Drkulec assisted on Iowa’s first goal of the 2019 season — a Kaleigh Haus strike — and she scored her second career goal in the Hawkeyes’ 6-1 win over Northern Iowa on Aug. 25.

The Hawkeyes return to action Thursday, hosting an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup against Iowa State at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Iowa Soccer Complex.  Admission is free.
