IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team (6-3, 0-0) defeated the Lipscomb Bison (3-7, 0-0), 3-0, in the team’s first match in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Tournament inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday.

Junior Griere Hughes led Iowa with 13 kills, junior Brie Orr added 32 assists, and junior Halle Johnston chipped in a team-high 20 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (25-21) | Iowa opened its first match of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Tournament on an 10-4 run before Lipscomb began inching back into the set. The Bison tied the score at 12 to force an Iowa timeout. Iowa surrendered the lead briefly before freshman Joslyn Boyer’s first career ace gave Iowa the lead.

Sophomore Courtney Buzzerio took over at the end of the set, tallying Iowa’s last two kills to secure the first set, 25-21.

SET 2 (25-20) | The second set looked familiar to the first with Iowa getting out to another early lead at 10-5. Iowa forced back-to-back timeouts from the Bison following their 13th point and maintained its momentum throughout the set. Freshman Kyndra Hansen added a flurry of kills to give the Hawkeyes a 23-16 lead as they eventually won the set off a kill from junior Griere Hughes.

SET 3 (25-13) | Iowa finished strong with a convincing win in the third set. Iowa opened on another big run and forced a Bison timeout at 8-3 following a block by Hansen. Lipscomb attempted to fight back in the set, but the door was shut thanks to a flurry of attacked from sophomore Hannah Clayton, Courtney Buzzerio, and a block from Clayton and Hansen. Iowa finished its first match of the day with a sweep.
