NORMAN, Okla. — The nationally-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team had another successful day at the ITA Central Regional Championships on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Iowa advanced both doubles teams to the semifinals with decisive wins on Saturday. Matt Clegg and Nikita Snezhko dropped Big Ten foes Patrick Cacciatore and his partner Albert Sprlak-Puk of Nebraska (8-5). Top seeded and nationally ranked No 56 Will Davies and Oliver Okonkwo bounced Tulsa’s Daniel Siddall and Santalla, 8-6. Both duos will play again tomorrow for a chance to compete for the regional championship.
In singles action, the Hawkeyes had two student-athletes advance to the Round of 16. Davies got things going, defeating Wichita State’s No. 30-seed Orel Ovil in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). No. 2 seed and nationally ranked No. 69 Kareem Allaf took care of business dropping Marius Frosa of Wichita State, 6-0, 6-4.
In the Round of 16, Allaf cruised to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Minnesota’s Sebastian Vile. Davies fell in his Round of 16 match to No. 5 seed Mason Beiler of Oklahoma (6-1, 6-2).
Clegg, Okonkwo, and Snezhko dropped their respective singles matches in the Round of 32. Morgan Lohan and Joe Tyler lost their consolation matches this afternoon.
