T&F Notebook: B1G Invite #3/Husker Big Ten Invite

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field team will be split up this weekend. A mid-distance and distance group travels to Bloomington, Indiana, to compete at the B1G Invite #3 on Friday, while the rest travel to Prairie View, Texas, to compete at the Husker B1G Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Competition begins in Bloomington with the women’s 800 meters at 5:20 p.m. (CT). Competition begins in Prairie View on Friday at 10 a.m. (CT) with the women’s hammer throw. Competition begins Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT) with the 110 hurdles of the decathlon. A full schedule of events and link to live results is located at hawkeyesports.com/tracklive.

USTFCCCA Team Ratings
The Hawkeye women are rated No. 27 in the April 12 USTFCCCA Rating Index. The Hawkeyes are the third highest ranked Big Ten women’s team and check in at No. 5 in the Midwest Region.

The Hawkeye men are rated No. 25 in the nation and No. 5 in the Midwest. Iowa is the only top 25 nationally rated men’s team in the Big Ten.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: JAYLAN MCCONICO
Jaylan McConico grabbed the gold medal in the 200 meters at the B1G Florida Invitational April 2-3. McConico recorded a career-best time of 21.09. This time ranks second in the Big Ten and 38th in the NCAA West Region. McConico also recorded a near career best in the 110 hurdles with a time of 13.64 in the prelims. This time ranks second in the Big Ten and fourth in the NCAA West Region. McConico will be competing in the 4×100 relay, 110 hurdles, and the 200 meters this weekend in Texas.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: SERENA BROWN
Serena Brown finished with the silver medal in the discus at the B1G Florida Invitational with a throw of 57.44 meters. This mark was not just a career best for Brown, but also only her second time competing for the Hawkeyes. Brown’s throw ranks second in the Big Ten and fifth in the NCAA West Region. Brown is competing in the discus throw this weekend in Texas.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: JAMES CARTER JR.
James Carter, Jr. has recorded a career best in each event so far this outdoor season. At the B1G Florida Invitational, Carter finished second in the long jump and triple jump. Carter posted career bests of 7.75 meters in the long jump and 15.94 meters in the triple jump. Carter is ranked first in the Big Ten in the long jump and triple jump. These marks currently rank 11th and 12th in the NCAA West Region. Carter Jr. will be competing in the long jump and triple jump this weekend in Texas.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: MARIEL BRUXVOORT
Mariel Bruxvoort took home the bronze medal in the 400 hurdles at the B1G Florida Invitational with a time of 60.41. Bruxvoort also ran a leg of the fourth place 4×400 relay team that recorded a time of 3:42.12. Bruxvoort’s season-best time of 60.33 currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten and 31st in the NCAA West Region. Bruxvoort will be competing in the 200 meters, 400 hurdles, and the 4×400 relay in Texas.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: JEFF ROBERTS
Jeff Roberts finished seventh in the 1,500 meters at the B1G Florida Invitational with a career-best time of 3:47.94. The time was a career best by almost two seconds. Roberts currently ranks seventh in the Big Ten and 67th in the NCAA West Region. Roberts also recorded an eighth place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.80. Roberts will be competing in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters this weekend in Indiana

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: AMBER AESOPH
Amber Aesoph recorded two career bests in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters at the B1G Florida Invitational. Aesoph finished 15th in the 800 meters with a times of 2:15.39. Aesoph grabbed the silver medal in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:42.28. She is competing in the 800 metes and the 1500 meters again this weekend in Indiana.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: JAMAL BRITT
Jamal Britt returns to the track this weekend after a one week hiatus. Britt took home the gold medal and the silver medal in the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles at the B1G Florida Invitational two weeks ago. Britt posted a career-best time of 13.52 in the 110 hurdles. That time ranks first in the Big Ten and first in the NCAA West Region. Britt recorded a time of 51.43 in the 400 hurdles, a mark that ranks first in the Big Ten and 16th in the NCAA West Region. Jamal Britt will be competing in the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, and the long jump this weekend in Texas. This will be Britt’s first long jump since the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

WHAT 2: WATCH 4: JENNY KIMBRO
Jenny Kimbro brought home two gold medals in the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles at the B1G Florida Invitational. Kimbro posted season best times of 13.42 and 59.25. Kimbro also ran a leg of the fourth place 4×400 relay team that recorded a time of 3:42.12. Kimbro’s time in the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles both rank first in the Big Ten and 24th and 16th in the NCAA West Region. Jenny Kimbro will be competing in the heptathlon, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, and the 4×400 relay this weekend in Texas.

BIG TEN HONORS
Senior Laulauga Tausaga has been awarded Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week two times this season. She swept the shot put and discus events at the Big Ten North Florida Invitational on April 2-3. She won the shot put with a throw of 17.94 meters, then the No. 1 mark in the country. She won the discus with a mark of 59.24 meters. She also swept the discus and shot put evets at the Big Ten Invite #1 on March 26-27. Her discus mark of 60.81 meters leads the country.
Junior Jamal Britt was named men’s track athlete of the week after setting career bests in the 110-meter hurdles and 200 meters at the Big Ten Invite #1. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.68, a mark that ranks sixth all-time in program history. He ran the 200 in 21.22.

REIGNING BIG TEN OUTDOOR CHAMPIONS
The Iowa men’s track and field team won the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on its home track in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes claimed their fourth program title, and as defending Big Ten Outdoor champions (2019) and the reigning 2019 indoor champions, are among the favorites to win it again. The last Big Ten men’s team to win consecutive outdoor championships was Minnesota in 2009-10.

2021 BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP
The Hawkeye men won the 2021 Big Ten Indoor Championships with a school record 119 points. It was Iowa’s first outright Big Ten Indoor Championship since 1929. The men won two gold medals including James Carter in the long jump and Peyton Haack in the heptathlon. The women placed third with a total of 75 points, matching the highest finish in program history. Paige Magee won gold in the 60-meter hurdles.
