IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa forward Meike Ingles has been named to Top Drawer Soccer’s Freshman Best XI first team, it was announced Monday.
Ingles is one of two Big Ten players on the first team along with Penn State’s Eva Alonso. Ohio State’s Peyton McNamara is a second-team selection.
Ingles earned the distinction after coming on strong during Iowa’s magical postseason run. After going scoreless during the regular season, Ingles scored four times in the final six games, including three game-winners en route to being named Iowa’s Offensive Player of the Year.
The Shelby Township, Michigan, native had game-winning strikes in victories over Illinois, Minnesota, and the road win at No. 4 Penn State. It was the Hawkeyes’ first win in Happy Valley and the highest opponent Iowa has defeated in its history.
For her efforts she was named the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player and to the all-tournament team.
Ingles kept going in the NCAA Tournament, as she scored in the first half of Iowa’s near upset of No. 3 UCLA in the NCAA Second Round contest. She finished the season with nine points (two goals and one assist) on 38 shots (22 on goal).
Ingles twice earned Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week recognition for her postseason play as she helped Iowa to a 2020 Big Ten Tournament title as the No. 12 seed to earn its second straight (and third overall) NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Hawkeyes opened NCAA play with a 1-0 victory over Campbell to tally the first NCAA win in program history.
