Iowa Sweeps Incarnate Word

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of Iowa volleyball defeated Incarnate Word, 3-0, Friday afternoon at the Air Force Academy in the Mile High Invitational.

Courtney Buzzerio led in kills with 16, while Kyndra Hansen had a career high attack percentage with .588. Bailey Ortega paced the squad in assists with 40 and Mari Hinkle totaled 10 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Iowa, 25-18): Scoring went back-and-forth from the start. The Cardinals pulled ahead with the first lead, 6-2. Iowa came back to tie it, 6-6, and then took its first lead of the game, 8-7. The teams tied, again 10-10. Iowa took a substantial lead on a five point run, bringing the score to 15-11, forcing an Incarnate Word timeout. Iowa stayed up, forcing another Cardinal timeout at 19-13. Incarnate Word attempted a rally, but the Hawkeyes won by seven.

SET 2 (Iowa, 25-14): The Hawkeyes and Cardinals went neck-to-neck from the start until Iowa pulled away with its first big lead, 10-5. The Hawkeyes kept the energy rolling until they were up, 13-8, on a three point run, forcing an Incarnate Word timeout. Iowa expanded its lead, including being up by 10 points, twice. The Cardinals fought back with a couple of points occasionally, but the Hawkeyes cruised to victory.

SET 3 (Iowa, 25-21): Iowa scored the first five points Incarnate Word fought back to be within one point. The Hawkeyes pulled ahead once again with a three point run until they were, 15-10, forcing a Cardinal timeout. After the timeout, Incarnate Word went on a five point run, tying the game up at 17-17. Scoring went back-and-forth until Iowa was up, 21-18, making Incarnate Word take its final time out. The Hawkeyes scored four out of six points to secure the win.
