No. 4 Badgers Down Hawkeyes

MADISON, Wisconsin — The University of Iowa volleyball team lost, 3-0, to fourth-ranked Wisconsin on Wednesday night at the UW Fieldhouse.

Addie VanderWeide led the Hawkeyes with 11 kills. Bailey Ortega tallied 17 assists, and Maddie Slagle notched a team-best 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

Set 1 (Wisconsin, 25-21): The Hawkeyes stuck close with the Badgers through the first part of the set. Wisconsin pulled away taking leads of 13-9 and 15-11. The Hawkeyes battled back narrowing the deficit to one, 20-19, but Wisconsin scored five of the last seven points. Courtney Buzzerio paced the Hawkeyes with five kills in the opening set.

Set 2 (Wisconsin, 25-14): The Hawkeyes got out to a 2-0 lead to start the second set before Wisconsin went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. The Badgers increased their advantage to 9-4 before Iowa called a timeout. Wisconsin’s lead swelled to 18-11 after five straight points. The Badgers controlled the remainder of the set to gain a two-set advantage.

Set 3 (Wisconsin, 28-26): Iowa jumped out to a 10-6 lead forcing a Badger timeout. The Hawkeyes maintained the lead as the score climbed to 16-12. The Badgers battled back with a 4-0 run to make the score, 16-16. The score went back and forth the remainder of the way before the Badgers pulled away winning the third set and the match. VanderWeide recorded five of her 11 kills in the third set.

NOTABLES 

  • Today was Iowa’s third match against a ranked opponent this year (No. 11 Washington, and No.12 Nebraska).
  • VanderWeide made her 12th consecutive start and recorded her seventh match with double digit kills.
