ANN ARBOR, Michigan — The University of Iowa volleyball team was defeated by Michigan, 3-0, on Saturday night at Cliff Keen Arena.
Courtney Buzzerio paced the Hawkeyes with 12 kills. Bailey Ortega tallied 21 assists, while Mari Hinkle led all players with 20 digs. Amiya Jones hit a match-high .538.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (Michigan, 25-16): The first set featured eight ties and saw the Hawkeyes and Wolverines trade points early on. Iowa led 13-12 before Michigan went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. That lead would prove insurmountable, and the Wolverines would take the first set by nine.
SET 2 (Michigan, 25-21): The Hawkeyes opened the second set taking a 5-2 lead. The Hawkeyes and Wolverines would trade four-point runs making the score 9-6. Iowa would extend its lead to 15-12 before Michigan would answer and take a 16-15 lead. The teams traded points until, with the score tied at 21, Michigan tallied the final four points to close out the set.
SET 3 (Michigan, 25-21): Michigan took an early lead, 8-4, in the third set after trading runs with the Hawkeyes. The Wolverines pushed that lead to 17-13 before Iowa was able to narrow it to 19-16. Michigan registered four consecutive points to make things 24-17 prior to an Iowa 4-0 run before Michigan was able to score match point. Buzzerio tallied seven of her 12 kills for the Hawkeyes in the final frame.
