Rojas Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s gymnast Marissa Rojas has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the league office. It the first honor of Rojas’ career.

The Canton, Michigan, native earned the distinction after winning her first event title and posting two career highs in the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten road victory at No. 15 Michigan State. Iowa posted a season-high team score of 196.475 in the meet.

Rojas posted a career-best score of 9.925 on beam to take the top spot. The score matches a team season best and it is tied for eighth all-time in school history. She also competed on floor for the first time in her career, finishing with a career-best 9.800.

Rojas is the first Hawkeye since Adeline Kenlin to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Kenlin earned the distinction four times during the 2021 season.

Iowa returns to action Saturday, hosting No. 43 Nebraska at 5 p.m. (CT) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It is 90s Night at Carver. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children. Tickets are available at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.
