Hawkeyes Fall to Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – University of Iowa volleyball fell to Indiana, 3-0, Wednesday evening in Wilkinson Hall.

Senior middle hitter Amiya Jones had seven kills and two blocks to lead the team. Sophomore outside hitter Addie VanderWeide led the team with a season-high 12 digs. Setter Lily Tessier had a team high 13 assist in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Indiana, 25-16): Indiana opened the set strong with three straight points. Iowa got on the board with a kill from sophomore Michelle Urquhart. The Hawkeyes got within one on back-to-back attacking errors from the Hoosiers, 5-4. Junior setter Bailey Ortega registered a kill to make the score 8-6, Indiana. The Hoosiers points were coming in twos, as Iowa was able to stay in it with kills and an attack error from Indiana. The Hawkeyes took their first timeout down, 14-8. Iowa went on a 3-0 run to shorten the Indiana lead to four, and Indiana took their first timeout with their lead at 15-11. Jones had a big kill to extend the Iowa run to four straight. Junior outside hitter Audrey Black came into the set and got a kill, making the score 17-13, Indiana. A long rally between the two teams ended with an Indiana block to extend their lead to 20-13 and the Hawkeyes took their second timeout. Iowa got back-to-back points on a kill by junior Delaney McSweeney and a successful Hawkeye challenge. The Hoosiers controlled the pace of play throughout the set and was able to secure the set victory on an ace.

SET 2 (Indiana, 25-10): The second set opened evenly matched as Iowa got the early lead, 2-1, from kills by McSweeney and Urquhart. It was a back-and-forth affair as Iowa was able to regain the lead, 5-4, on a block by Jones. Indiana went on a, 5-0, run to take the lead, 10-6, and Iowa took their first timeout. The Hawkeyes quickly took their second timeout after another three-straight points from the Hoosiers. Indiana’s run ended at 12 as they took a commanding ,18-7, lead. In the end, the Hoosier lead was too much for the Hawkeyes to overcome as they were able to secure the set victory on three straight aces.

SET 3 (Indiana, 25-20): Indiana had a 3-0 run to take a quick, 3-1, lead. Iowa responded with five straight of their own, taking the lead, 6-3. The run included an ace from senior Mari Hinkle and a block and back-to-back kills by Jones. The Hawkeyes and Hoosiers were exchanging points as Indiana took their first timeout with Iowa up, 8-5. Iowa went on to score three straight to extend their lead to five. A kill from McSweeney improved Iowa’s lead, 12-7. Indiana opened a 3-0 run to get within two and Iowa took their first timeout of the set. Three straight errors from the Hoosiers gave Iowa the, 15-10, lead and Indiana called a timeout. Indiana came out of the timeout with back-to-back kills. Iowa responds with a kill from senior outside Edina Schmidt and an ace from Hinkle, making the score 17-12. The Hoosiers went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by two aces, to tie the score at 17. From there it went back-and-forth with kills to tie the set at 19. Indiana went on another run of three to take the lead, 22-20, and Iowa took their second timeout. Back-to-back kills for the Hoosiers brought them to match point. Indiana was able to complete the comeback and secured the match victory.
