IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field opened its 2023 indoor season with 15 titles and five top 10 all-time finishes at Saturday’s Jimmy Grant Invitational.
“With this meet you never really know, coming off of Thanksgiving break, where people are at, but we’ve had a great fall. I expected some really good performances,” Coach Woody said. “I thought we stepped up and actually outperformed what my expectations were, which is a good thing because I usually have pretty high expectations.”
Senior LaSarah Hargrove led the Hawkeye women through the 60-meter race, qualifying for the finals with a time of 7.39. Sophomore Lia Love (7.54), junior Paige Magee (7.56, personal best) and junior Myreanna Bebe (7.61) finished 2-4 and also qualified. Iowa finished 1-2-3 in the 60-meter hurdles with Bebe taking the title (8.29), Magee finishing as runner-up (8.33, personal best) and junior Tionna Tobias crossing the line in 8.44.
On the men’s side, junior Damoy Allen qualified for the 60-meter finals with a time of 6.71, while junior Grant Conway set a personal best of 6.87. Conway followed up with the 60-meter hurdles crown and another personal record, finishing in 7.69. His time places him first nationally in the 60-meter hurdles.
Freshman Holly Duax later took the title in the women’s 200-meter event, finishing with a time of 24.98, while freshman Julia Pattison earned second place (25.54). Love would return and set a meet record in the 300-meter with a time of 38.43.
“LaSarah (Hargrove) is going to be one of the best athletes in the Big Ten, and she had a great performance not only in the 60, but coming back in the 300,” Coach Woody said. “Lia Love opened her season and performed really well, winning the 300 today. That’s outside of her comfort zone. It was really good to see them compete well. With the women’s hurdles, pretty spectacular to open up with 8:29 for Myreanna (Bebe) and Paige (Magee) right behind her at 8:33. Our hurdle program is in a really good spot right now.”
Freshman Chloe Larsen set an individual best on her way to the 400-meter title, leading the way in 54.57. In the women’s mile, junior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch set a meet record with her personal best of 4:48.25.
Iowa posted strong results in both the men’s and women’s 4×400 relays. The Hawkeyes finished with top two times in both events with junior Katie Moore, freshman Audrey Biermann, freshman Gabby Cortez and senior Mariel Bruxvoort leading the women’s race with a time of 3:45.08. Freshman Ellie Rickertsen, Magee, junior Grace Bookin-Nosbisch, and Larsen were runners-up (3:46.75). The men were led in the 4×400 by junior Nick O’Connor, junior Gratt Reed, sophomore Martin Strong and junior Spencer Gudgel (3:15.54). Freshman Brett Wasick, junior Evan Schuster, freshman Ryan Schreiner and sophomore Phillip Jefferson finished in second (3:15.74).
Senior Zach Pluff recorded a personal record on his way to the high jump championship, leaping 2.08 meters (6’ 9.75”). Sophomore Jade Hunter set a new best with her second place finish in the high jump, hitting 1.65 meters (5’ 5”). Senior James Carter Jr. followed up with a title of his own, winning the long jump with a mark of 7.58 meters (24’ 10.5”). Tobias soared to 3rd all-time at Iowa with her leap of 6.14 meters (20’ 1.75”), earning the women’s long jump crown. Junior Peyton Haack won the men’s pole vault with a 4.90 meter personal best that ties Iowa’s 10th best all-time mark.
The Hawkeyes won both the men’s and the women’s weight throw. Senior Amanda Howe took the women’s title with a toss of 20.60 meters (67’ 7”), while senior Jordan Johnson sits in ninth all-time at Iowa following his crown-clinching throw of 20.04 meters (65’ 9”) in the men’s final.
“The weight throw went really well today. Amanda picked up where she left off last year with her Big Ten title,” Woody said. “With JoJo (Johnson), he’s the guy we are counting on. To be able to see him perform like that in his first time this year, that was fun to see.”
In the shot put, freshman Emma Callahan now ranks seventh all time at Iowa with her toss of 15.40 meters (50’ 6.25”), good for fourth overall in the meet. Senior Elijah Barnes won the men’s shot put with a mark of 17.98 meters (59’ 0”).
