The University of Iowa women’s golf team is heading to the Golden State to compete at the Fresno State Classic from March 26-27 in Fresno, California. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the San Joaquin Country Club with a 36-hole shotgun start on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

THE LINEUP
The Hawkeyes will send five golfers to California for the tournament. Iowa’s lineup will include sophomore Paula Miranda, freshman Shannyn Vogler, freshman Madison Dabagia, freshman Kaitlyn Hanna and senior Jordan Amelon.
THE FIELD
Iowa will compete against a field of 14 teams that includes: Arkansas State, Cal State-Bakersfield, Fresno State, Cal State-Fullerton, Grand Canyon, Iowa, Long Beach State, Nevada, Cal State-Northridge, Oral Roberts, Rutgers, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Xavier.
• Four teams in the field — Nevada (20), Xavier (73), Long Beach State (86) and Grand Canyon (100) — are ranked in the top 100 nationally in the Golfstat rankings.
THE COURSE
The San Joaquin Country Club is located in the heart of central California just north of Fresno. The course sits along the San Joaquin River and features terrific views and tall palm trees throughout the course with challenging play for all levels of golfers. As well, the nationally recognized course has been home to PGA Championships and many high level tournaments The course was designed by Bob E. Baldock in 1961, Baldock has left his mark on the West Coast on over 50 courses.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hawkeyes finished 10th at the Briar’s Creek Classic in South Carolina. Iowa tallied two sub 300 rounds and totaled an 891 for the tournament.
• Sophomore Paula Miranda led the team, firing a 216 total (71-72-73) to tie for 10th-place. It is the Mexico native’s best finish on the season and second best of her career behind her runner-up finish at last year’s Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
MIRANDA = TOP 10
Sophomore Paula Miranda fired an even par 216 (71-72-73) at the Briar’s Creek Invitational on March 13-14 in South Carolina. It was Miranda’s second career top 10 and fourth career top 20 finish. The Mexico native is third on the team with a 75.36 scoring average this season. She has led the team in three tournaments on the year.
UNDERCLASSMEN TAKEOVER
Iowa’s top four scoring averages during the 2022-23 season belong to underclassmen with freshman Riley Lewis leading the way with a 74.95 scoring average over 21 rounds. Lewis has two top 20 finishes.
• Freshman Shannyn Vogler is second on the team with a 75.19 scoring average over 23.5 rounds, sophomore Paula Miranda is third with a 75.36 average over 23.5 rounds and freshman Madison Dabagia is fourth with a 75.66 average over 23.5 rounds. Dabagia has two top 20 finishes this season.
LEWIS NAMED BIG TEN GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Riley Lewis earned her first career Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week honor, earning the distinction on March 8 after tying for 13th place at the UNF Collegiate with a two-over par 216. The Illinois native fired a second-round 67 — the second lowest round in school history — courtesy of four birdies and two eagles.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Hawkeyes will return to action April 15-16, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for the Lady Buckeye Invitational in the final competition prior to the 2023 Big Ten Championships.
