Record Day Across the Country

DES MOINES, Iowa – Seven student-athletes improved etched their names into the University of Iowa track and field record books as the Hawkeyes competed in Iowa, California and Florida on Friday.

In Gainesville, Florida, at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, junior Gratt Reed and the 400-hurdle triad of senior Mariel Bruxvoort and juniors Paige Magee and Nylah Perry made moves on Iowa’s top-10 lists. Reed’s 20.54 200-meter performance ranks fifth. Bruxvoort (56.71), Magee (56.79) and Perry (58.61) rank fourth, sixth and ninth, respectively, on the 400-hurdle list.

“Today, we had some huge breakout performances starting with the men’s 200m at Florida,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Austin Kresley ran the top all-condition time in Iowa History and was on the edge of breaking 20 seconds to finish fourth in one of the deepest sprints fields in the country this season. His performances so far continue to prove he’s one of the best sprinters in the country.  Gratt (Reed) followed him with a huge PR and the fifth fastest wind-legal performance in Iowa history.

“The women 400 hurdlers continued their impressive seasons with all three running PRs and top-10 all-time marks. To have two women run 56 point in the 400 hurdles on the same team is very rare. I believe they will both get down to 55 point very soon.”

In the pit, junior Tionna Tobias came out on top, winning the women’s long jump with a 6.11-meter (20’ 0.5”) jump.

Senior Kat Moody and redshirt freshman Lizzie Korczak won and posted the third best marks in program history in shot put and javelin at the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines. Moody improved her third ranked shotput mark to 16.78 meters (55’ 0.75”) and Korczak moved up six spots on the javelin top-10 list with a 47.86-meter (157’ 0”) throw.

Moody won her second event of the day in the discus competition, registering a 54.32-meter (178’ 2”) throw. Senior Amanda Howe posted her season-best hammer throw of 63.46 meters (208′ 2″), finishing first among collegiate athletes and second overall behind former Hawkeye Nia Britt (64.64 meters; 212′ 1″).

On the men’s side, senior Elijah Barnes won shot put (18.04 meters; 59’ 2.25”), senior Jordan Johnson won discus (59.27 meters; 194’ 5”) and freshman Mike Stein won javelin (65.01 meters; 213’ 3”). Senior Ryan Williams recorded a 54.82-meter (179’ 10”) throw in javelin to take second behind Stein.

“Our throwers had a tremendous meet at Jim Duncan today with Kat Moody leading the way again with two huge marks in the discus and shot put,” Woody said. “It was great to see Elijah break the 18-meter mark again and go 1-2 with Quintin continuing his impressive season. In tough wind conditions, I was excited to see Lizzie (Korczak) have a collegiate PR in the javelin and Mike Stein continue to build on his freshman campaign throwing over 65 meters again. I was also very impressed with Jordan Johnson in the discus. He had a huge 59-meter throw, which is right off of his PR.”

Winning continued for the Hawkeyes on the track in the women’s 4×100-meter relay (46.29), consisting of sophomores Mytika Mayberry and Brynley McDermott, freshman Julia Pattison and junior Katie Petersen, and by sophomore Ian Geisler in the 5,000 meters (14:52.54).

Junior Grace Bookin-Nosbisch broke her personal best in the 800 meters by nearly two seconds at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azuza, California, to earn her spot in the Iowa record book. Her 2:07.20 time ranks ninth all-time. At the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, junior Nick Trattner ran the fourth-fastest 5,000 meters in program history, crossing the finish in 13:55.57.

“The mid-distance group got things started at Bryan Clay with some great performances in the 800 meters tonight,” Woody said. “Alli (Bookin-Nosbisch) ran a great race in an even paced 2:06 for her debut outdoor race this season. I am very excited for Grace (Bookin-Nosbisch) with a huge PR in 2:07 low and on the verge of running 2:06.

“The men were led by freshman Ryan Schreiner who continues to have a very impressive freshman campaign with a huge PR of 1:48.68 to win his heat. We had some great progress in that group with multiple guys running between 1:49-1:50.”

The Hawkeyes close the weekend on Saturday at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational. Live results are linked on the track and field schedule page on hawkeyesports.com or by following @IowaXC_TF on Twitter.
