  • The Hawkeyes are playing their second trophy game of the 2023 season when the Heartland Trophy is on the line on Saturday in Madison. Iowa is 25-8 in its last 33 rivalry trophy games against Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
  • Both Iowa and Wisconsin are receiving votes in the Associated Press and AFCA Coaches’ Polls.
  • Head coach Kirk Ferentz moved into third place on the all-time Big Ten wins list. Ferentz has 117 career Big Ten victories, only trailing Ohio State’s Woody Hayes (153) and Michigan’s Bo Schembechler (143). He won his 200th career game on Sept. 9 at Iowa State, becoming the 27th coach to reach the milestone at an FBS institution and just the 99th college coach across all divisions since 1890.
  • QB Deacon Hill will return to Wisconsin, where he appeared in one game in two seasons in Madison. Hill has thrown a touchdown pass (to TE Erick All) in consecutive games. He is 21-of-56 for 274 yards and two touchdowns in 2023.
  • RB Kaleb Johnson returned from injury to record his first 100-yard game of the season, rushing for 134 yards on 17 attempts against Purdue. He had a 67-yard touchdown run – the second-longest rush of his career. The performance pushed Johnson over 1,000 career rushing yards (1,004); he is the 51st player in program history to reach the milestone.
  • Iowa rushed for 181 yards against the Boilermakers, the second-most by the Hawkeyes this season and most against a Big Ten opponent since rushing for 184 yards last season in West Lafayette.
  • TE Erick All has a team-high nine receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns in Iowa’s last two games. All is Iowa’s leading receiver with 19 catches for 280 yards and three touchdowns. The three TDs are a career high.

THE HEARTLAND TROPHY

Inaugurated in 2004, the Heartland Trophy goes to the winner of the football battle between Iowa and Wisconsin. The trophy was designed and crafted by artist and former Iowa football player Frank Strub.
•Wisconsin leads the series, 7-5, since the inception of the Heartland Trophy in 2004. The trophy has resided in Iowa City since Iowa’s 24-10 win in Kinnick Stadium last season.

D CREATES HAVOC

  • After combining for three sacks and 24 tackles for loss in Iowa’s first five games, the Hawkeye defense created havoc in Week 6 against Purdue. Iowa finished with a season-high six sacks (by five different players) and had a season-high 12 tackles for loss, matching the defense’s performance in the Music City Bowl victory over Kentucky.
  • DL Logan Lee had career-highs across the board, finishing with 10 tackles, 2.5 TFL and two sacks. It was his first career game with 10+ tackles.
