Murphy Opens Iowa's Indoor Season in Boston

BOSTON – University of Iowa track and field begins its indoor campaign on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener.

Junior distance runner Max Murphy will compete in the men’s 5,000-meter race at 4:30 p.m. (CT) at the BU Track and Tennis Center. Murphy will be Iowa’s only representative in one of the nation’s premier distance meets. In 2022, 10 of 16 NCAA qualifiers used their times from this meet to punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships.

“We are very excited for Max to open up our indoor track season this weekend in Boston,” Director of Iowa Track and Field Joey Woody said. “We are looking forward to seeing him build off of his great cross country season and 2023 NCAA Championship performance.”

The Bettendorf, Iowa, native is coming off a record-setting cross country campaign, breaking Iowa’s 6,000-meter school record and qualifying for the NCAA Championships in November — where he placed 69th.

“This is a great opportunity that Max has earned,” distance and associated head coach Randy Hasenbank said. “I know that he is looking forward to racing his peers, as that will bring out the best in him.”

Murphy holds Iowa’s third-best indoor 5,000-meter time, clocking a 13:58.87 at the Big Ten Championships in 2022. His time earned him a sixth-place finish.

The meet will be broadcast on FloSports (subscription required) and updates will be provided via X (iowaxctf).

The Hawkeyes continue their indoor season on Saturday, Dec. 9, hosting the Jimmy Grant Alumni Invitational at the Hawkeye Indoor Track Facility.
