Notes: Hawkeyes Set to Host No. 26 Nebraska

THIS WEEK 

The 27th-ranked University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team will host the No. 26 Huskers on National Girls & Women in Sports Day inside of Xtream Arena on Sunday Feb. 4 at 1:00 p.m. (CT).

PREVIEWING THE NEBRASKA HUSKERS 

• Head coach Heather Brink is in her 13th season on the Husker coaching staff. 

• This will be the eighth meeting between Iowa and Nebraska under Coach Libby. 

• The Huskers have gone 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference competition. 

• Nebraska competed in the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad, where they defeated North Carolina and saw six career highs throughout the meet. 

• In their home opener, the Huskers took the win over the No. 22 Illinois Fighting Illini and recorded their highest home-opening score since 2012. 

LAST TIME OUT 

• The GymHawks fell short to No. 14 Michigan State, 195.700-197.400 

• Freshman Eva Volpe posted a new personal best in the all-around with a score of 39.175. 

• Volpe also set season highs on vault (9.800) and floor (9.775) against the Spartans. 

• Sophomore Gianna Masella made her 2024 vault debut with an impressive score of 9.825. 

• The Hawkeyes secured a season high of 49.100 on vault. 

VOLPE EARNS B1G HONORS 

• Eva Volpe has been named the Big Ten’s Co-Freshman of the week. 

• The honor is Volpe’s first of the season and her career. 

• The Pearland, Texas, native earned the distinction after competing in the all-around in all three of Iowa’s meets last week. She brought home the event title on bars against Southern Utah on Jan. 26. 

• Volpe scored a season-best, 39.175, in the all-around against Michigan State on Jan. 28. She also set season highs on vault (9.800) and floor (9.775) against the Spartans. 

• The freshman is one of two Hawkeyes who has competed in the all-around event this season. Volpe is the first Hawkeye to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season.
