Soccer Notes: Hawkeyes Host Nebraska, Travel to Iowa State

THIS WEEK
The No. 17 University of Iowa soccer team is set to host Nebraska on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. (CT) in the Big Ten Opener. Iowa then travels to Ames to take on Iowa State in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

SCOUTING THE HUSKERS
– The Huskers sit at 3-3-0 for the season with wins over Colorado St. (3-2), Creighton (5-2), and Oregon St. (2-1).
– The Huskers are led by senior Sarah Weber who leads the team with six goals. Weber’s six goals on the season rank tied for 11th amongst all players in the country. Weber is tied for 13th in the country averaging 2.33 points per game.
– Weber is responsible for six of Nebraska’s 10 goals on the season. Weber has 35 shots on the season which is tied for the most of all players in the country.
– Freshman Reese Snowden has scored three goals on the season for the Huskers. Junior Lauryn Anglim is responsible for the one other goal on the season.
– The Huskers goalie, junior Cece Villa, is averaging 1.63 goals allowed per game. Villa’s save percentage is .778 and is yet to put together a shutout this season. Villa has 28 saves on the season.
– The Huskers have allowed 11 goals this season with nine of them coming in the second half.

SERIES HISTORY – NEBRASKA
The Hawkeyes trail the Cornhuskers in the all-time series, 4-12-1. The Hawkeyes have won four of the last six matchups while outscoring the Cornhuskers 13-9 the last six times out.

SCOUTING THE CYCLONES
– The Cyclones are 2-3-2 on the season with their two victories coming over Western Illinois (3-0) and Northern Iowa (6-1).
– Iowa State is led by senior Morgan Furmaniak who leads the Cyclones with four goals on the season. Furmaniak has 18 shots on the season with nine of them on goal.
– Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper, Avery Gillahan, has allowed 11 goals on the season (1.62). Gillahan has 28 saves with a save percentage of .718. Gillahan has one shutout on the season in the victory over Western Illinois.
– The Cyclones have outscored their opponents 15-11 on the season. Their opponents have outshot them 86-83.

SERIES HISTORY – IOWA STATE
Iowa leads the all time series over the Cyclones 15-8-2. The Hawkeyes have won 12 of the last 15 matchups against Iowa State. Last time the two teams faces was at Iowa Soccer Complex where the Hawkeyes won the game 2-1. Kenzie Roling and Elle Otto each had a goal in the 2023 matchup.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
– Head Coach Dave DiIanni secured his 100th win at Iowa in the 3-0 victory over FGCU. DiIanni is in his 11th year at the helm of the Iowa women’s soccer program, where he has amassed 102 wins with the Hawkeyes.
– Last season was another for the history books, as Iowa won the program’s second Big Ten Tournament Championship. Iowa qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2019 and fourth time in school history.
– Iowa opened the season ranked No. 25 to start the year; that was the first preseason ranking in program history. The Hawkeyes earned their first postseason ranking last fall, checking in at No. 24 to finish the year. Iowa peaked at No. 14 in the national polls last season, another all-time best. The Hawkeyes are currently ranked No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 20 in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll.
Millie Greer (#39) and midfielder Sofia Bush (#87) were ranked top-100 freshmen at the end of the season by Top Drawer Soccer.
– Last week freshman Berit Parten was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Macy Enneking was also voted Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week for the second consecutive week last week.
– Bush, Enneking and Greer were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The Hawkeyes were ranked eighth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. Enneking is a United Soccer Coaches national preseason honoree and was named to the Mac Hermann Trophy Watch List.
– Enneking, Johnston and graduate-student Rielee Fetty were voted team captains.

LAST WEEK
The Hawkeyes played host to the Baylor Bears. Baylor came into the game on a five game win streak and a 5-1 overall record on the season. The Hawkeyes outshot the Bears 11-0 in the first half but weren’t able to get any points from it. The Hawkeyes also had three corner kick opportunities in the first half compared to the Bears zero. At the end of the first it was 0-0. Rielee Fetty put the Hawkeyes in the scoring column with a header off of a corner kick in the 56th minute assisted by Lauren Geczik. Berit Parten then struck again with a header in the 84th minute assisted by Elle Otto to push the Hawkeye lead to 2-0. Maggie Johnston then put the exclamation point on the game with a goal of a penalty kick in the 89th minute to give the Hawkeyes a 3-0 lead. The Hawkeye defense posted their fourth straight shutout and only allowed two shots on goal.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Iowa has allowed just two goals so far this season. The two goals came in the Hawkeyes first two games of the season (Colorado College and Western Michigan).
– Iowa has posted four consecutive shutouts. The Hawkeyes are allowing 0.33 goals per game which is tied for 14th in the country.
– The Hawkeyes saves percentage of .895 is ranked tied for 22nd amongst all teams in the country.
– Iowa has outshot their opponents this season 107-52. The Hawkeyes allowed just two shots on goal last time out against Baylor.

A KEEPER!
Goalkeeper Macy Enneking set a program record for shutouts last season (12.5), tying for fifth nationally.
– The Hilliard, Ohio, native has started all five years at Iowa, anchoring the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of conference tournament championships.
– Enneking is the first Hawkeye named to the Mac Hermann Trophy Watch List and the first Iowa player featured on the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch List.
– Enneking has allowed just two goals on the season and is yet to allow a goal in the second half.
– Enneking became the first Hawkeye to win Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week three times in a career and also the first Hawkeye to win the award in back-to-back weeks.
– Enneking has 25 career shutouts. She needs one more shutout to tie the school record and two more shutouts to break the school record. Hannah Clark (2012-15) currently sits atop the record list with 26 career shutouts.
– Enneking needs eight victories to tie the all-time school record for career victories.

– Won each of two NCAA Tournament victories in program history
– Made three of four NCAA Tournament appearances in program history

FRESHMAN SENSATION
– Berit Parten has scored a goal in three consecutive games. Parten has scored four goals across those three games (FGCU, No. 18 Wake Forest, and Baylor).
– Parten leads Iowa in goals, points, shots, and shots on goal.
– Parten was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week last week. Parten was the 12th Hawkeye to be named Freshman of the Week and the first Hawkeye to win the award since Kenzie Roling in 2021.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
The Hawkeyes have 13 seniors/graduate students on their roster.
– B1G Time: The senior class won a Big Ten Championship and a NCAA Tournament game at home in 2023. The Hawkeyes defeated Bucknell in the first round of tournament play, 2-0 (2OT).
– Fourth and fifth-year players combine for 19 of Iowa’s 26 returning goals and 55 of 80 total points returning on offense.
– Maggie Johnston and Meike Ingles were also a part of the 2021 Big Ten Tournament Championship team. The Hawkeyes defeated #4 Penn State, 1-0, in the Big Ten tournament semifinals prior to beating Wisconsin, 1-0, in the Big Ten Tournament Championship. The Hawkeyes would go on to beat Campbell, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

2 FOR THE MONEY
Iowa’s record is 47-2-3 in its last 52 games when scoring two goals or more, which dates back to October of 2017. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 this year in multi-goal games.

90 TRACKER
Rielee Fetty and Millie Greer were the two Hawkeye position players to register 90 minutes played in the 3-0 victory over Baylor. 18 Hawkeyes registered minutes against the Bears.
