IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 18 ranked University of Iowa soccer team defeated No. 15 Penn State, 2-1, on Thursday night at Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes advance to 8-0-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in Big Ten conference play.
Penn State’s Amelia White scored a goal a minute into the game to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage over the Hawkeyes early in the game. The Hawkeyes responded quickly with a goal from sophomore Sophia Bush in the fourth minute of the game to even the score at 1-1. The goal was Bush’s third goal of the season.
The Hawkeyes then took the lead in the 30th minute with a goal from graduate student Maya Hansen, her fourth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by graduate student Rielee Fetty and senior Meike Ingles. The assist is Fetty’s second of the season and Ingles’s second assist of the season.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Nittany Lions five to two in the first 45 minutes. Each goalie had one save in the first half and Penn State had two corner kicks while the Hawkeyes had one. At the end of the half, the score remained the same at 1-1.
The Hawkeye defense was in full force in the second half as they didn’t allow Penn State to get a shot off or a corner kick. Penn State goalie, Amanda Poorbuagh, had two saves in the first half as the two shots Iowa had in the second half were both on goal. Iowa had one corner kick in the second 45.
Graduate student, Macy Enneking, finished the game with one save and once again didn’t allow a goal in the second half as the Hawkeyes beat the Nittany Lions 2-1.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“The game was much more open that I was hoping for it to be. But, on the same token Penn State is a very good team and they are very technical in certain areas, so they do open you up and make it difficult. I don’t remember the last time that a Penn State team only had two shots. That’s a credit to our group.”
“I thought we moved the ball and did enough to open them up and put them on the defense. So, I’m really proud of our kids, but you know we’ve got to be humble and keep getting better.”
