The University of Iowa soccer team announced today the hiring of MikeBrewer as an assistant coach.
Brewer joins the Hawkeye staff from Lincoln, NE, where he was the head coach atNebraska Wesleyan University. Brewer took the reigns at NWU in June of 2001 and wasresponsible for all aspects of running the Division III program.
While at NWU, Brewer coached two first team and two second team all-conferenceselections and a first team Verizon Academic all-American. The team was awarded the NSCAATeam Academic Award after finishing second in the nation with a 3.64 grade point average.
In addition to his duties at the university, Brewer coached at Saint Pius X Central HighSchool where he was responsible for goalkeeper training and administering training sessions. Hehelped lead the team to a 16-3 record in 2003 and a runner-up finish at the Nebraska Class BState Tournament.
Since January of 2001, Brewer was the head coach for the girl’s Capital SoccerAssociation Gold Force, where he coached the team to a second place finish in the ENSAPremier League. Brewer was also the club’s Boys Director of Coaching and PlayerDevelopment from June to December of 2002.
In September of 2000, Brewer served as an assistant on the boys 89/90 ODP team for theNebraska State Soccer Association and in 2001 he was promoted to the head coach. In additionto the boys team, Brewer took the reigns of the girls 89 ODP team in 2002.
Prior to joining the Nebraska State Soccer Association, Brewer served as an assistant forhis alma mater, Hastings College. He helped lead the team to a GPAC regular season andtournament championship after finishing with an 18-4 overall record, including a 10-0conference mark. The team was also a NAIA Region IV Tournament finalist.
Brewer’s playing experience includes two years as a starter at forward and midfield atHastings College. While playing, he was a NAIA all-America Scholar-Athlete and helped leadthe team to the NAIA regular season championship in the program’s second year of existence.Brewer graduated in May of 1998 with a B.A. in communication production and a minor inpsychology.
Brewer received his NSCAA National diploma in January of 2001 and earned hisNSCAA Advanced National diploma one year later.
