A pair of nationally ranked college football teams from two of the nation’s most respected conferences will square off Saturday in legendary Kinnick Stadium when the Iowa Hawkeyes entertain the Sun Devils of Arizona State. Game time is set for 5 p.m. with live national television coverage provided by ESPN2.
Here’s what Iowa’s head coach Kirk Ferentz had to say about the Hawkeyes’ fourth and final non-conference opponent in 2003:
“This shapes up to be a very exciting football game. This is without a doubt the biggest challenge of our young season. We are playing an outstanding football team that is extremely talented and well-coached. Coming into the season, many picked Arizona State to be in the top three in the conference and battle for the Pac 10 title.
“On defense, they are big up front and they are mobile and active. They have linebackers who run very well and their secondary is tough-a very good test for us. Also, they are very strong and talented on special teams.”

“Their quarterback Walters had an exceptional year last year. When I look back at the last five quarterbacks we have faced, he fits into the same category as Palmer and Roethlisberger . He is an excellent thrower and a great leader. They also have a nice supporting cast to go with him…a solid offensive line, running backs who are very good and a core of great receivers with good speed.

“All in all we must be at our best considering the number of injuries we have had in the last month or so. It will take our best team effort to overcome that, but we are looking forward to the game. This is a great venue for a national television audience.”
