Waters A Finalist For Van Nostrand Award

Iowa senior tennis player Stuart Waters (Omaha, NE) has beenselected as the Midwest Region IV nominee for the John Van Nostrand Memorial Award. Theaward is a stipend that is presented to an outstanding senior men’s player who plans to pursue aprofessional career after college. Waters is one of six national nominees.

Waters, a two-time all-Big Ten selection, emerged in his final two seasons at Iowa. Heplayed at the No. 1 singles position and led the Hawkeyes in dual meet wins in the last two years.

He also fared well in fall tournament action, participating in some of the nation’s mostcompetitive tournaments. During the 2002 tournament season, Waters advanced to thequarterfinals of the Midwest Region championships, the round of 32 at the Icy Hot/ITA Men’sAll-American Championships qualifying round and the round of 16 at the Baylor Intercollegiate.He entered the Big Ten singles tournament as the No. 1 seed.

Waters also excelled in doubles competition, finishing his career with 44 dual meet winsto rank 10th in school history. He is the only player in Iowa’s top 10 to have played everycollegiate doubles match at the No. 1 position.

The John Van Nostrand Memorial Award will be presented May 21 at the NCAAchampionships in Athens, GA.
