IOWA CITY – The No. 9 University of Iowa field hockey team blanked the Ball State Cardinals, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Grant Field. Iowa improved to 4-2, while Ball State fell to 3-4.

The Hawkeyes dominated play most of the game, out-shooting the Cardinals 17-6, including a 11-2 advantage in the second half. Iowa also had the advantage in penalty corners, 13-4.

For the second-straight game, senior Pattie Gillern opened the scoring and picked up the game-winning goal. The Medford, NJ, native carried the ball in the circle and buried a shot from a tough angle on the right of the cage at 26:54 of the first half. The goal was Gillern’s team-leading fifth of the season.

The Hawkeyes kept the ball almost exclusively in their attack zone during the second half, not allowing Ball State to get back in the game. Freshman Kelly Slattery gave Iowa an insurance goal with 8:07 left in the game when she deflected a Lindsay Miller shot past Ball State goalkeeper Tracy Bannister. It was Slattery’s second goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Barb Weinberg made three saves to pick up her second-consecutive shutout.

Iowa will return to action Sunday against Temple. The game is set to start at noon.
