The No. 9 University of Iowa field hockey team defeated the No. 17 California Golden Bears, 2-1, in overtime Thursday at Grant Field.
With the game knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game headed into seven-on-seven, sudden-victory overtime.
Just over two minutes into overtime, senior Pattie Gillern broke away from the pack and bore down on California goalkeeper Kelly Knapp. She was taken down from behind by a Golden Bear defender and earned a penalty stroke. Junior Lauren Stiver converted the stroke, giving Iowa the 2-1 win.
The Hawkeyes took a 1-0 lead just 1:41 into the second half when Sarah Dawson intercepted a pass at the top of the circle and nailed a backhanded shot. The Golden Bears struck back just over a minute later on a goal from Nora Feddersen.
For the game, Iowa out-shot California 23-8, and earned 10 corners to the Golden Bears’ 4.
The Hawkeyes will return to action Saturday with a game against Penn State at noon on Grant Field.
