Iowa began the game on offense for 46th time in its last 48 games. Iowa has started on offense in 48 of 54 games under Kirk Ferentz.Iowa had its second straight sellout of the season (70,397). Iowa’s upcoming home games against Penn State and Illinois are also sold out.Iowa recorded its fourth straight homecoming victory and its first over Michigan (1-3). In addition, the Hawkeyes improved their overall homecoming record to 48-39-5. Four of the past five games between Michigan and Iowa have been decided by six points or less, with the exception being Iowa’s 34-9 win in Ann Arbor last season.Today’s win, coupled with last year’s 34-9 win at Michigan, marked only the second time Iowa has defeated Michigan two consecutive years. The Hawkeyes defeated the Wolverines two straight years in 1984 and 1985.Iowa has won 17 of its last 19 games in Kinnick Stadium dating back to the end of the 2000 season. Iowa’s two losses came against Iowa State (36-31 in 2002) and Michigan (32-26 in 2001).Iowa’s victory over Michigan marked its second win over a nationally ranked opponent this year. Iowa defeated then-No. 16 Arizona State 21-2.Iowa out-scored Michigan 6-0 in the third quarter. The Hawkeyes have not allowed any points in the third quarter this season, out-scoring their opponents 43-0 in six games. After trailing 20-10 in the first half Iowa scored 20 straight points before Michigan stopped that streak.Today marks the fourth straight game Iowa has held its opponent to less than 100 yards rushing. Buffalo, in the second game of the year, is the only team to rush for over 100 yards against Iowa in six games this season. Today marked only the second game this year that the Wolverines failed to rush for at least 100 yards (Oregon, -3).For the fourth time in six games, the Iowa defense did not allow its opponent to score on its opening possession of the game. Miami, OH (field goal) and Michigan State (touchdown) are the two opponents to score on their first drive. Michigan did score on its second and third possessions as Iowa trailed 14-0 in the first quarter for the second straight week. Michigan scored two field goals in the second quarter after Iowa had allowed a total of just three points (Michigan State field goal) in the second quarter of its first five games.Iowa’s offense failed to score on its first possession for the fourth time in six games. Iowa began the win over Buffalo with a touchdown drive and opened the win at Iowa State with a field goal. Senior tackle Robert Gallery was in Iowa’s starting line-up for the 37th straight game. His starting streak is the longest current streak in the Big Ten among offensive linemen. OG David Walker missed his third straight game after starting the first three games of the season. Eric Rothwell, who did not play at Iowa State after starting the first two games, played left guard in place of Walker for the third straight week and Pete McMahon played right guard for the third straight game.Senior DB Bob Sanders was in the starting line-up for the first time this season. Sanders played in the opening win over Miami and returned to action in the loss at Michigan State after missing three games. WR Ed Hinkel missed his second game, WR Maurice Brown missed his third straight game and FB Champ Davis missed his fourth straight game.Senior PK Nate Kaeding, with his first PAT in the first half, set the Iowa record for career PATs, with 143. Tom Nichol held the previous mark of 142. Kaeding also had a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter and he was good from 25 and 32 yards in the third, raising his career-best scoring total to 310 points. He has made all eight field goal attempts and all 19 PAT attempts this season. Kaeding has made 55-67 career field goal attempts, including 21-26 outside of 40 yards and 3-3 outside 50 yards, and 145-147 PATs. Kaeding now ranks fourth all-time in kick scoring in the Big Ten Conference with his 310 points. The native of Coralville, IA, has converted three field goals or more in two games this year. Kaeding converted four field goals at Iowa State.Redshirt freshman Calvin Davis had four receptions in the first half, including the first touchdown of his career, after having just four receptions in Iowa’s first five games. Davis for the game had 60 yards on seven receptions and also had a 23-yard kickoff return. Iowa’s two touchdown passes by QB Nathan Chandler (to Calvin Davis and Ramon Ochoa) are the first touchdown passes allowed by the Michigan defense this season. Chandler in the game completed 17-34 passes for 195 yards and the two scores. Chandler has 11 touchdown passes in six games and he also ran for a score against Michigan, his second rushing touchdown of the season.For the third straight game between Michigan and Iowa, the punting game played a part in a touchdown being scored just before halftime. In both of the last two games, Michigan scored. In 2001, the Wolverines recovered a blocked punt in the endzone just before the half and went on to win 32-26. Last season Iowa punter David Bradley fumbled a punt snap and Michigan scored after taking over at the Iowa one-yardline. Today it was a 43-yard punt return by Iowa’s Ramon Ochoa that led to Iowa’s touchdown in the last minute of the second quarter.RB Fred Russell rushed 26 times for 110 yards, improving his career rushing totals to 367 carries for 2,131 yards. Russell has rushed for at least 100 yards four times in six games in 2003 and in 12 games in his career.DB Antwan Allan came up with his second interception of the season in the third quarter, which led to a field goal that tied the score at 20-20. Allan’s first interception of the season came in the 21-3 win over Miami, OH in the first game of the season.DB Chris Smith blocked a Michigan punt in the third quarter, which led to the field goal that gave Iowa a 23-20 advantage. Smith earlier this season recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in Iowa’s win at Iowa State. Smith’s block vs. Michigan was Iowa’s third blocked punt this season.Iowa punter David Bradley punted nine times, recording a 44.2 average and downing one inside the 20. The nine punts marked the second-most punts in a game in his career. He punted 11 times against Purdue in his freshman season in 2001.Iowa recorded season highs in passing yardage (195), completions (17) and attempts (34).Iowa held the ball for 30:56, while Michigan maintained possession for 29:04. Today marked only the second game this season that the Hawkeyes had the advantage in time of possession.
