Oct. 8, 2003

THIS WEEK — The women’s golf team travels to Manhattan, KS to compete in the 12-team Marilyn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. The tournament will be held at the par-72 (6,151 yds) Colbert Hills Golf Course. The first 36 holes will be plaid Monday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with 18 holes begining with a shotgun startgun start at 8:30 a.m.

LAST WEEK — The Hawkeyes finished 12th at the Shoot-out at the Legends. Leading the way for Iowa was freshman Virginie Bonfils. Bonfils fired a three-round total of 223, which was good enough for 20th place. Junior Shannon Fleming finished tied for 31st with a 227.

HEAD WOMEN’S COACH Bobbe Carney — Coach Carney is in her second year as coach of the Hawkeyes. Her resume is highlighted, most notably, by being named LPGA Midwest Section Coach of the Year in 1989. In 2001, she was named a Top 50 Instructor by Golf For Women magazine.

LINEUP — Competing for the Hawkeyes are seniors Laura Holmes and Jennifer Reints, juniors Liz Bennett and Shannon Fleming, and freshman Virginie Bonfils.

QUOTING CARNEY — “I was especially pleased with our performance last week. We turned in the lowest score since I’ve been here in our second round with a 297. We would have liked to have finished a little better but we were still well ahead of our goal of shooting average rounds of 310. We had great play out of freshman Virginie Bonfils and junior Shannon Fleming. They both shot their career-best rounds in collegiate competition. This week we are up against a very strong field. I was pleased to see improvement from last week to this week and I am looking forward to continuing our improvement in our last competition of the fall.”
