Evantston, IL – The tenth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 2-0, in a hard-nosed defensive game Sunday. The Hawkeyes improved to 11-5 (2-3), while Northwestern fell to 7-8 (1-4).

The first half was a tight defensive battle, with the two teams taking a combined three shots. Iowa goalkeeper Barb Weinberg and her counterpart Sherri-Anne Nyberg each saved every attempt they saw, keeping the game knotted at 0-0 heading into the half.

The Hawkeyes finally broke onto the scoreboard when Margot McMahon buried a shot 7:40 into the second half. The goal was McMahon’s fifth of the season.

Six and a half minutes later, Iowa’s leading scorer Pattie Gillern put in an insurance goal for the Hawkeyes. The forward from Medford, NJ, now has 15 goals on the season. Gillern attempted seven shots on the game, three more than Northwestern’s entire output.

Weinberg made four saves on the day for her Big Ten leading sixth shutout of the season.

The Hawkeyes will wrap-up the regular season next weekend with games against Indiana (Fri., 2:30 p.m.) and top-ranked Wake Forest (Sun., noon).
