Hawkeyes Fall to Wake Forest, 4-0

IOWA CITY – The ninth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell to the No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Sunday, 4-0, at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes fell to 11-7, while Wake Forest upped it’s record to 16-1.

The first seven minutes of the contest were evenly played, with the Hawkeyes picking up some quality scoring chances. After that, however, Wake Forest started to pull away.

The Demon Deacons got their first goal 17:34 into the game on a shot from Kelly Doton, then scored three minutes later when Doton fed a backdoor pass to Lauren Crandall to give Wake Forest a 2-0 lead.

Wake Forest took a 3-0 lead before halftime on a penalty corner goal from Ariel Meyers. Maeke Boreel was credited with the assist. The Demon Deacons added another in the second half by Lucy Shaw to end the scoring.

Junior back Lauren Stiver picked up a pair of defensive saves during the game.

Iowa will head off to the Big Ten Tournament next weekend in State College, PA. The No. 5 seed, Iowa will open against fourth-seeded Penn State Friday at 12:30 p.m.
