The Iowa men’s gymnastics team will begin the season ranked sixth nationally according to the GymInfo pre-season Coaches Poll. The Hawkeyes are ranked fifth in the highly competitive Big Ten behind top-ranked Ohio State, third-ranked Illinois, fourth-ranked Michigan and fifth-ranked Penn State. Minnesota, ranked eighth, rounds out the Big Ten.
Iowa returns 11 lettermen from the 2003 squad that finished third at the Big Ten Championships with an overall record of 7-6. All-American and Big-Ten horizontal bar Champion Linas Gaveika (Vilnius, Lithuania) leads the Hawkeyes, along with All-American Michael Reavis (Tallahassee, FL). The Hawkeyes will also rely on strong contributions from seniors Michael Kelly (Orangevale, CA) and Matt Metzger (Cincinnati, OH).
The Hawkeyes will hold the co-ed intra-squad Black & Gold meet Saturday, December 6 at 2 p.m. in the Iowa Field House. Iowa opens the 2004 season January 10 at the Windy City Invite in Chicago, IL.
