MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa’s women’s tennis team competed well in day one of the Badger Blast Tournament. Iowa was led by strong performances in the singles competitions. The Hawkeyes opened the first day against the host Wisconsin.
Iowa struggled a little in the doubles matches. The Hawkeyes came away with one victory to go along with two defeats. Sophomore Chelsea Glynn and senior Jennifer Hodgman came away with the only Hawkeye victory in the doubles competition. Glynn and Hodgman defeated Wisconsin’s Shana McElroy and Kaylan Caiati, 8-6. Freshmen Hilary Tyler and Hilde Jansma lost in a close decision to the Badgers’ Teresa Gonzaga and Lindsay Martin, 8-6. In the final double match of the competition the Hawkeyes’ Meg Racette and Hillary Mintz lost to Wisconsin’s Katie McGaffigan and Nicole Beck. The freshmen were defeated by a score of 8-4.
In the singles matches the Hawkeyes dominated the Badgers, coming away with five victories to just two losses. Iowa’s Meg Racette, Jennifer Hodgman, Hilde Jansma, Hillary Mintz, and Jen Schulte all came away with victories.
The Hawkeyes will continue competition tomorrow with a mock dual against Northwestern at the Badger Blast Tournament.
